As the Internet of Things continues to grow with the introduction of more and more connected devices, the opportunities to integrate technology into everyday life seem to be increasing exponentially. This growth is coupled with growing reputability, as major players like Samsung and Google acquire smaller Home Automation companies.
In 2014, Samsung acquired SmartThings, maker of home security kits focused on the ability to self monitor, and Google acquired the smart thermostat company Nest, and shortly after that, the WiFi security camera company Dropcam just months later.
The clout of the Samsung and Google names did little to increase consumer awareness, as all three acquired companies saw relatively steady volumes of consumer feedback after they were acquired (as demonstrated by the size of the bubbles in the graph above). Technology is still very much improving and developing in the home automation market, and Samsung and Google have assumed powerful positions in potentially driving further connectivity in this market, but are failing to gain the attention of consumers.
Now that large companies are becoming more intimately involved in the expansion of the Internet of Things, they must focus on promoting the usefulness of ‘smart home’ technology, as it is no longer a relic of the SciFi genre, but an actual possibility with the potential to help home owners save energy, money, time, and piece of mind.
Google just announced some major updates to its Android Wear operating system, including the ability to tether to your Android handset over wifi instead of bluetooth, some new wrist gestures guaranteed to put you on TSA’s watch list, and a redesign of the way that apps are accessed and used, including a feature that let’s apps keep the screen on by default, something great for runners, especially for distances less than a mile given the battery life impact. All-in-all it looks more like a collection of technology “coulds” rather than any coherent view of what you “should” use Android Wear to augment your life in compelling ways.

The shift in app navigation at least acknowledges a complaint we’ve seen surface over and over again with consumers. Something I referred to at my keynote at Wearables Techcon as the “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” problem: the incessant need to swipe your way to the app/feature/photo you want ensures endless hours of pawing at your wrist like a dog begging to be let out.
There has to be a better way to navigate wearable devices…
Apple would have us ignore the last 8 years of training that a light touch on your iPhone was enough to control the known universe, and instead has introduced ForceTap on the Apple Watch. Apple has improved upon the one dimension of Android Wear’s Row Row Row your way through screens and instead would have us scrub through a constellation of application icons, the only way to activate one is by ensuring the desired app is in the center and then executing that new party trick, a Force Tap. The light taps so cleverly used on our touchscreens and touchpads alike ensure the object of desire is obscured only for an instant while you get along with your life. ForceTap requires you to add an extra step with a grunt for flourish as you dwell over the very thing you want to see. Sure, ForceTap promises to virtually eliminate the accidental activation that kept you from three stars on level 97 on Angry Birds Star Wars, but it is the equivalent of telling the Google Car to drive where you can’t see.
We’ve seen some technology that points towards a future where wearables react to our intent rather than continued pawing in one or two dimensions on the surface. It’s coming, soon, but I can’t reveal it just yet.

Samsung is trying to get into the Home Automation business the old fashion way, by buying their way in. This is a very different strategy than Samsung has used in other consumer markets, preferring in the past to carpet bomb consumers with a mix of marketing and blitz of products until there is only mindshare and market share left for Samsung and one or two other competitors (Smartphones anyone?). Question is, if you were Samsung and your two biggest frienemies, Apple and Google, had both laid out their Home Automation Strategy, Google with the Acquisition of Nest, Dropcam, and the establishment of a Home Automation Venture Fund, and Apple with HomeKit, a platform included in iOS 8 that is meant to bring IoT device manufacturers deep into Apple’s walled garden, what would you do? Samsung, who successfully competes against both Google and Apple, could have entered the market consistent with their historical strategies and picked a niche to initially own, then drowned the segment with products and services until consumers give up and swallow the view of Home Automation Samsung is selling. With proven prowess in more diverse devices than Apple (iFridge anyone) and a slightly schizophrenic software strategy (TouchWiz anyone?), a Home Automation software platform might have made more sense.
Instead Samsung chose to target SmartThings, a good firm to be sure, but it’s no Nest or DropCam. In fact, of the major Home Automation Brands, SmartThings is not one of the leaders and lags behind SimpliSafe, DropCam, Schlage and others. It may seem a bargain to Samsung at $200 million but much more will have to be invested to command the market position already held by DropCam and SimpliSafe.
Consumer interest in SmartThings is increasing but not enough to justify a Samsung acquisition. Other companies are doing more to move consumers into the IoT ecosystem.
In fact, SimpliSafe would have been the better acquisition target. Already a clear leader in the segment, this hero of DIY home security consumers has established a significant and growing beachhead in homes, from which they can simply (couldn’t resist) expand their capabilities for Home Automation, similar to the recent move by DropCam to include object trackers to help find your keys. Samsung Home Automation strategy needs a strong software component to craft a user experience that consumers will choose of both the upstarts and juggernauts already winning in the market.

For those who may be curious, in Greek mythology, Argus Panoptes is the name of a giant with 100 eyes. This week’s blog will be focused on the eyes, or eye, of a smartphone. Like many of the other features that can be found on smartphones today, people look to find the best of the best. The most common determinant of camera quality on a smartphone that people pay attention most to is the number of megapixels the camera has. If a few is good then more must be better! This smartphone has 8 megapixels and shoots well, if another smartphone has 16 megapixels then it must be twice as better! Logically this all makes sense, if a car has more horsepower then it’s stronger. So why not choose a smartphone with the highest megapixels? Yes, to a certain extent, the megapixels matter but is only one of many factors that go into producing a quality photo. Below are the top ten smartphone cameras that produce pictures that you, the people, thought were best and most pleasing.
The graph shows that, for example, the Nokia Lumia Icon has more than 30% of its consumers expressing satisfaction with only a small percentage expressing negative opinions when it comes to the camera aspect of the smartphone. The Sony Xperia Z had the fewest complaints among their consumers in regards to their smartphones camera functionality. In terms of net sentiment, our consumer data agrees that the number of megapixels a camera has is only one of many factors that plays into the overall user delight. The amount of megapixels the camera packs shouldn’t be the only determining factor if you’re looking for a smartphone that produces pleasing images.
Sensor size, texture, and contrast are the other factors that come together within a smartphone to produce a picture. Megapixels are like the bigger, stronger, more noticeable older sibling that overshadows their younger siblings whose roles are in fact vital to the overall strength and success of the household. The younger siblings in the camera world are speed, quality of the camera app, HDR and panorama features that come along with the phone. They all work together to provide the user the ability to take fast, beautiful, and clear pictures.
Take the HTC One Max, it only has 4 megapixels but produces a quality picture that people enjoy because they decided that instead of cramming pixels, they would engineer their sensors to house larger pixel sizes allowing more light to be captured. The data shows that people are pleased and HTC’s 4 megapixel shooters (or what HTC calls UltraPixels) are the David and Goliath in the smartphone camera world.
Reversely with Nokia’s Lumia 1020, they decided to jam pack their phone with a mind boggling 41 megapixels. On average that’s 4 to 5 times more megapixels than other smartphones out on the market. Nokia made an effort to stand out from the competition and they’ve seemingly created a beast. But it’s also worth noting that although it pacts impressive specs, it doesn’t dominate the competition. Although being 4 times in strength it isn’t 4 times as delightful, as seen in our consumer data. This beast, with all its might and glory, is actually a gentle giant.
We thought it was peculiar that the Moto X was able to crack the top ten. When the smartphone first hit the market, it was successful in capturing the hearts of people like the way roses do on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately every rose has its thorns and for consumers, using the camera function on the Moto X felt like touching the thorns on a rose. “If a decent camera is even slightly important, then avoid this phone like the plague.” Since then Motorola has addressed the issue and a recent update made the camera much more user friendly and improved the quality of pictures that were produced. Motorola took the time to repair the crack in their overall impressive armor and the people noticed.
For all the smartphone lovers out there who are looking for a phone that shoots well and produces quality pictures, these ten are the ones that stand out in the sea of smartphones on the market. Companies are constantly engaged in wars with each other, which has no foreseeable end, to produce higher megapixel phones to convince the public that their newer model is better than the competition. That doesn’t fool us and it should not fool you either. We listened to the stories you told, the opinions you had, and concerns that you voiced. Driven by power of the people and Argus tools, the insights are picture perfect.
